Friend
Description & Tech Specs
"Have you got the bag of ‘friends’ Ray?’
the name stuck…
For almost 50 years, the Friend has been the most sophisticated and essential gear on any climber’s rack, tested on thousands of miles of cracks. Friends set the standard in protection, and approaching the 50th anniversary of this revolution, Wild Country honors that legacy with a new evolution.
Spring-loaded camming devices for trad climbing protection. Nearly 50 years after Wild Country invented the Friend, this generation keeps the 13.75° camming angle that made the original work and updates everything around it. The lobes are milled and left unanodized — softer aluminum bites harder, and a machined grooves add friction on rock. The Magic Cord sling extends up to 20 cm, so you can place and extend in one motion without fumbling for a draw. A hollow double-axle keeps weight down across the range, with the most noticeable savings on the bigger sizes. The Magic Cord sling uses core-mantle construction: a UHMWPE core for strength, a nylon and UHMWPE sheath for abrasion, cut, and UV resistance. A wear indicator tells you when it's time to re-sling. Certified lifespan is 14 years (10 in use, 4 in storage).
